At Cardhu, the division of labour was clear over 200 years ago: Helen Cumming took care of the whisky. The tax officials would have liked to take a closer interest as well. At the time, distilling was still done without a licence. Her daughter-in-law Elizabeth later took over and set the distillery on a course of growth. Family history with plenty of twists and turns.Today, more and more women are shaping what happens in stills, casks and bottles. An industry that many still associate with men is increasingly taking on a face that reflects its true diversity. Women run distilleries, develop new whiskies and use their discerning noses to decide which cask needs more time and which blend will make it into the glass.We taste the results. We also talk about the women behind them, their ways of working and their rather precise ideas of what makes a good whisky. There will be sniffing, comparing, discussing and occasionally very reverently peering into the glass.An evening with character. In the glass and behind it.
